Growing their family! Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt are expecting their second child — and sharing all of the details exclusively in the new issue of Us Weekly.
“I couldn’t be more excited. I don’t know who I’m the most excited for — myself or Gunner or Spencer,” pregnant Montag, who is due in December, tells Us. “I just felt like something was missing. I felt like a person was missing in our family that I had this intense love for. And I kept praying about it. I’m like, if I’m not meant to have another kid — because I had accepted that at this point — I just wanted to not have that desire so strongly and I just wasn’t sure if it was going to happen or not. I just get so emotional about it.”
Montag, 35, and Pratt, 38, who wed in 2008, are the parents of son Gunner, 4. The Pratt Daddy Crystals founder tells Us that it’s been a “roller-coaster” for the couple trying to conceive baby No 2.
“Heidi has been crying a lot. It’s like every month, ‘Here we go.’ I was like, ‘If it happens, it happens.’ But Heidi didn’t want to do it that way,” he says. “It was so long at this point I don’t know if I have any emotion left because it was very challenging.”
The “Body Language” singer tells Us that she “tried really hard” to go with the flow, but she got “concerned” after six months of trying to get pregnant.
“I think a lot of women struggle with this and it’s just not something a lot of people talk about because it’s so hard and it’s so personal. And I felt really blessed having Gunner and having such a beautiful healthy son, so I was trying not to be ungrateful for my life and for what I do have,” the Hills alum says. “And at the same time, it was such a deep longing in my heart that I had — wanting a sibling for Gunner and wanting to expand our family.”
Montag tells Us that it was “about 18 months” of trying before she learned she was pregnant, noting that their friend and former costar Brody Jenner even offered to pay for IVF treatments “a few months ago.”

While the pair haven’t been shy about their efforts to get pregnant (keep reading for more details of the extreme diets and more they tried), Montag and Pratt are gearing up for how their life will change now that baby No. 2. is a reality.
“There are definitely different challenges and some nerves that are coming up with having a second child,” Montag says. “It’s going to be a big adjustment for all of us. I mean, we are moving Gunner out of his room into a different room. There’s going to be a baby waking up throughout the night, hoping it doesn’t wake Gunner up. This time, [even with my] pregnancy — I don’t get to rest and sleep when the baby does. I have a toddler to wake up with, take care of and I’m going to have the baby. So it’s going to be a big juggling act.”

Changing Her Diet
“My wife started eating testicles,” Pratt tells Us of Montag trying to get pregnant. “I ate testicles as well. Hers were raw, mine weren’t.”
Montag explains, “I was eating bison hearts and raw meat and lots of liver. And I got on an animal-based diet and I had all my blood work done and I donated a bunch of blood. … Toward the end, I was really on an animal-based diet, which is mostly meat so I really eliminated most vegetables because they say there’s oxalates and toxins that could really interfere with [pregnancy]. I had minimum fruit, I basically had no grains and was on a few supplements. And then I also found a lubricant that’s supposed to be great for fertility. And all that came together with God’s timing and I got pregnant.”

The Reveal
“I decided to stop taking pregnancy tests because I was so disappointed every month that I wasn’t pregnant. So I just thought when I was late I’ll wait another day,” Montag tells Us. “Then, I waited the next day and I went downstairs, like, ‘I’m just gonna take the pregnancy test.’ So I took my Clear Blue pregnancy test and I saw I was pregnant. I couldn’t even believe it. I was shocked! I was crying. I ran upstairs like ‘Spencer, it says pregnant!’ Gunner was like, ‘Why are you crying? What’s happening?’”

Breaking the News
Montag tells Us that the couple called their respective mothers to share their baby news first.
“We got Gunner a stuffed animal too with the name ‘big brother’ and gave it to him,” Pratt adds. “He was very happy."

Big Brother Status
“Gunner talks to the baby all the time,” Montag says. “And right before I got pregnant, he was praying and said, ‘God, please I want a baby right now.’ And I said, ‘How are you going to feel if that doesn’t happen?’ And he goes, ‘It’s OK, God has the best plan.’”
The former MTV star adds that her son “originally” wanted a brother, but they explained to him that he might have a sister. “And he started getting excited for that,” she tells Us. “So he’s just excited for a baby.”

What’s in a Name?
“We have baby names — I have a list from last baby names and I have this one name that I really wanted to use for the last [pregnancy], but we’ll see,” Montag tells Us. “I have lots of girls' and boys' names so we’ll see.”

Baby Bumping
“Shockingly [with] this pregnancy, my stomach popped out so quickly and I guess that happens with second babies,” Montag tells Us. “But I feel like my stomach is so big and I’m trying to hide it going around town everywhere.”

Dad Life
“I love being a dad and I love all the different ages. So I’m excited to really appreciate how little a baby is. Because now, I look back at photos and now our son is huge and you can’t just hold him,” Pratt tells Us. “So I’m most excited about having just a little [baby] and to really realize how fast it goes. People always told me it goes by so fast and it does not feel that way. … It doesn’t feel fast, but now looking back it went by so fast.”

Keeping Positive
“This pregnancy also has had more difficulties. Even in the beginning, I had some bleeding. And that was scary and I never experienced that,” Montag explains. “For me, this has really been an eye-opening experience of what pregnancy can be for a lot of women. The first time everything was so great and so easy and I was like whatever, this pregnancy stuff is so easy. But it’s not that way. It’s given me a whole different version of pregnancy and empathy and love for what everyone is going through with pregnancy. It’s such a fun thing and it’s such a high stakes situation at the same time."

Going Strong
“I’m not sure we could get closer,” Pratt tells Us of their strong marriage. “If it was something this could have been it.”
Montag adds, “This whole experience has definitely added another layer to our relationship and marriage.”
